Betta Facts and http://www.bettafish.com/

Although, it may not seem like it, your Betta Fish can actually recognize their owner! Some studies also show that they can recognize vibrations from your voice, and can learn their names!
Anyways, if you're looking for a good website to learn more about your Bettas, I recommend, http://www.bettafish.com/
I am KatrinaLovesFish567 on the site, so go ahead and click the link and friend me!

Walmart Betta Fish

The conditions in most Walmart for the majority of fish is just awful. The Bettas are delivered in PLASTIC ZIPLOCK BAGS! I don't recommend buying your fish here if you want a healthy Fighting Fish. The only reason why I would ever buy a Betta from a grocery store is to save them from that prison they keep them in. It's almost impossible to find a healthy Betta there. I recommend going to a pet shop or a breeder if you want a good, healthy fish!

Veiltail Betta Fish

Veiltail Bettas are the most common type of Betta Fish. They are always sold in petstores as far ask know. A lot of people don't appreiciate them as much as they should. Most people refer to them as "Walmart Fish" which they aren't. They are absolutely beautiful. My first Betta is a VT (Veiltail) and I've had him for such a long time. I absolutely adore him!

Preparing Your Tank or Bowl

Please do not EVER keep your betta in the little plastic cup you got him or her from. If you need a home for one single Betta, then a bowl or tank will suffice. You don't necessarily need to go out and buy a 15 gallon tank or anything, but a 3-5 gallon tank or bowl would be nice. Please don't keep your little friend in a vase with a plant on top. It isn't a real home for your betta. Once you've found the perfect living place for your Betta, you need some decorations. Definitely get some plants, but not the plastic ones. They harm their delicate fins. Get some silk plants, those are some of the best. They need plants so they have a place to hide and sleep. Getting real plants is good too, if you don't mind cleaning them. Then, a place to swim through will keep your fishy entertained for hours at a time. Like a rock with big holes in it would be perfect. Then, you should probably get some rocks or stones to put on the bottom of the tank to keep from seeing all the gross waste at the bottom of your tank. Also, if you're looking for a clean tank, I recommend putting what most people call, moss-balls. You can find them at your local pet store. They absorb lots of the waste materials in your bowl, making things nice and clean. You do, however, have to clean the actual moss-ball as well, but trust me, it isn't difficult. Hopefully, your new environment turned out great for your betta!

Picking out the perfect Betta!

You definitely want to choose a Betta Fish you want to keep for a long time! Betta fish live for quite some time... Some people have gotten them up to 6 years, but the most common lifespan of a Betta is about 2-3 years, with good care. If you aren't into shopping online, shipping things, or driving cross country to find a Betta, I recommend PetCo or PetSmart! Most every town or city has one! Please, please, PLEASE, DO NOT BUY BETTAS FROM GROCERY STORES LIKE WALMART!!! They treat their fish with absolutely AWFUL quality, and it's just awful there. Anyways, if you're a first time Betta owner, I recommend getting a single male Betta. If you can't afford some giant tank, you can go for something smaller. Remember, this is for one Betta. Make sure you have AT LEAST 1/2 a gallon if not more. I love 15 gallons for my female Betta sororities, but what you start out with will make do. Don't forget food lol. Anyways, you want a healthy Betta so when you take him home he won't kick the bucket... Find a few that you like. Then it's time to narrow the choices. Look for the ones who don't have poopie floating around in their cups. The ones who have clear water. And the ones who look active. Once you do this, line the healthy ones up, in a row. See if they flare at each other which shows if they are healthy or... Like half dead. Then once you see the ones who puff their gills, pick out the prettiest Betta in the group! I hope you and your new Fighting Fish get along well!
